 The Afghan Connection
The Gem Show
Gary Bowersox is an international gem hunter who has worked with three Afghan governments, the Soviets, and the mujahideen to travel through the back door of Pakistan to export gem and mineral materials out of this dangerous area within the Middle East.
Gary Bowersox has been traveling into Afghanistan for years to search for and secure the finest of rare gems. Back in July 2001, before the events of 9-11, one of Gary's epic journey's was filmed by a television crew as he slips past Taliban border guards and both walks and rides horses in a search for the oldest mine on earth.
Rich Blue Lapis lazuli, the precious gemstone that decorates the death mask of Tutankhamun, is still mined in the remote mountains of Afghanistan. And Gary fearlessly (and with great skill) arrives that the ancient mine.
Through his affiliation with the Gemological Institute of America and other organizations, Gary has brought recognition since 1972 to the quality of the gemstones mined in the Hindu Kush, most of which were unknown until the Soviets first began to bomb the area and expose the crystals.
Gary is a fascinating individual who has written the definitive book, the "Gemstones of Afghanistan" and also been the subject of "The Gem Hunter in Afghanistan" video and television special. He will be bringing over 60,000 gems from the mountains of Afghanistan once again to Topaz Goldsmith and Gallery again this year.

This is a great opportunity to meet this legend and hear some of the stories (and narrow escapes) he has had finding these incredible gem stones in this remote and dangerous country. You don't want to miss this event.

What better way is there to say "I love
you"...

"I searched online for a Hawaii goldsmith because most
Hawaiian jewelry stores must send out to have custom work
done, including engraving and sizing -- and I was in a hurry. Happily, Maui
goldsmith David Fairclough was not only full of great creative
suggestions, he crafted a set of wedding rings for myself
and my bride that provided just the right touch of elegance
and simplicity. Best of all, he did it for me at an
affordable price! We couldn't be happier with our Hawaii
jewelry and David's excellent service at Topaz!"

"When we decided to get married Roxanne wanted to wear her
grandmother's ring. The ring was about 70 years old; but the
setting was pretty worn and the band was as thin as a
razorblade. It was comforting to discover David learned his
craft by working on antiques. Nancy put the ring under a
microscope and we saw all the wear and damage. It's a miracle
the diamonds were still there. When David finished the ring,
we were in awe of its beauty. It was pretty lackluster
before, but now the brilliance is like night and day.
Roxanne gets complimented on it all the time and it hasn't
left her finger!"
